Bone Spring Shale - Devon Energy (DVN)

Devon Energy (DVN) is currently drilling for oil in the Permian Basin, Midland Basin, and the Bone Spring Shale play. Devon Energy (DVN) is one of the leaders in the Bone Spring Formation.

In the Permian Basin, Devon increased oil and natural gas liquids production 22 percent compared to the fourth-quarter 2010. Liquids production accounted for nearly 75 percent of the 53,000 equivalent barrels per day produced in the Permian Basin during the quarter.

The company completed eight operated Bone Spring wells within the Permian Basin in the fourth quarter. Initial daily production from the eight wells averaged more than 600 Boe per day per well.

Okay. My follow-up, Dave, relates primarily to the Bone Springs in the Permian, an area where, in the recent past, results have been pretty good. I wonder if you could update us. I didn't hear you specifically mention Bone Springs activity in your review of the quarter.

Well, we've had a number of good Bone Springs wells in the quarter. I think we highlighted, actually, in the earnings release that we had a number of good Bone Springs wells on the order of around 600 barrels a day or so that we achieved out there. I think we had 8 wells average more than 600 barrels per day, 8 operated wells in the fourth quarter that achieved more than 600 barrels a day so we're seeing very good results out there. We see a good inventory of opportunities sitting out there. We estimate we probably have 350 to 400 locations remaining in the Bone Springs just on our existing inventory and will probably drill somewhere around 80 this year. So again, you can see 4- to 5-year inventory of Bone Springs opportunities.

SandRidge Energy, Inc. (SD): Permian Basin Update

SandRidge Energy, Inc. (SD) recently announced that it has sold its Bone Spring asset package for $110 million, approximately $2,750 per acre. At closing, SandRidge received cash proceeds of $88 million. An additional $22 million was placed in escrow to be released to SandRidge in the first quarter of 2011, subject to satisfaction of customary post-closing conditions. The Bone Spring package includes approximately 40,000 net acres in the Permian Basin with development potential in the Avalon Shale and Bone Spring reservoirs. There is no production or proved reserves associated with these assets, and SandRidge will retain all rights above and below the Avalon Shale and Bone Spring formations. Proceeds from this transaction will be used to fund a portion of SandRidge’s planned capital expenditures in 2011.

Bone Spring - Wolfberry - Spraberry Oil Fields - Permian Basin

Recently, I've been asked to blog about the recent activity going on in the Permian Basin right now located in West Texas. The Permian Basin is the hot spot right now as was the Eagle Ford Shale over the past year. While we are seeing the majority of the rigs continue to flock to the Eagle Ford Shale, there is a huge jump in rigs and drilling activity in the Permian Basin.

The Permian Basin consists on a combination of Oil fields which also contain Natural Gas. On the east side, we have the Spraberry Field as the top zone, the Dean Formation as the middle layer, and the Wolfcamp Shale as the bottom zone. When the oil producers drill into all of these formations, they are calling it the Wolfberry.

On the west side, we are talking about the top layer being the Avalon Shale ( also known as Leonard Shale ) with it mixing into the top layer of the Bone Spring which is made up of three zones. After the bone spring formation, we have the wolfcamp shale again. This area is located in West Texas and extends up into New Mexico. Lea County New Mexico and Eddy County New Mexico are the hot spots.

The Spraberry is seeing acreage go for $15,000+ per acre in some spots regarding mineral rights leasing. All of these zones are hot hot hot and producing a lot of oil.

Climarex Energy Co. (XEC): Permian Basin Update

Climarex Energy Co. (XEC)recently release an operational update on the Permian Basin:

In the first three quarters of 2010 Cimarex drilled and completed 61 gross (47.1 net) Permian Basin wells, 95% of which were completed as producers. At quarter-end, 18 gross (14.4 net) wells were in the process of being completed or were awaiting completion. Third-quarter 2010 Permian production averaged 169.4 MMcfe/d versus a third-quarter 2009 average of 152.1 MMcfe/d.

Drilling principally occurred in southeast New Mexico, mainly targeting Bone Spring, Abo and Paddock formations.

Recent horizontal Bone Spring wells brought on production include the KHC 33-26 2H (96% working interest) at 1,050 barrels equivalent per day (Boe/d), Irwin 13 Federal 1H (100% working interest) at 1,010 Boe/d and Penny Pincher 21 Federal 1H (78% working interest) at 650 Boe/d. Third-quarter Abo horizontal oil wells include the Franklin 18 Federal Com 4H (81% working interest) at 510 Boe/d and the Ticonderoga 16 State Com 4H (100% working interest) at 325 Boe/d. All individual well rates are 30-day gross averages.

Cimarex has 12 operated rigs running in the Permian Basin.

Anadarko Petroleum (APC): Avalon Shale update

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC) is currently testing Avalon shale to see if the formation is profitable: Robert Daniels, Senior VP states: "On the Avalon, what we've done so far is in the Bone Spring itself. And we have looked at the Avalon which does seem to have some characteristics that would make it attractive to test. And so we do have some plans to go out and test the Avalon shale and see what sort of producibility it may have, what kind of recoveries we would get, what type of hydrocarbon. We do plan to drill two wells in there right now. We have 170,000 acres out in the West Texas area that would be prospective for the Bone Spring and Avalon Shale. So we would be testing it and see what we get out of it."
