Tuscaloosa Marine Shale - Devon Energy (DVN)

Devon Energy (DVN) just reported on the new emerging oil field in the U.S called the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale is located in Mississippi and Louisiana. While Devon Energy (DVN) reported some mechanical problems with their first well, the future is very bright for large oil recoveries.

In the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, we have completed our first 2 horizontal wells in the play. The Beech Grove 68H was a short-lateral horizontal and had a series of mechanical problems but still managed to deliver a 24-hour IP of 186 barrels per day. This well is not indicative of what a properly completed long-lateral horizontal well can do in the Tuscaloosa. The second well, the Soterra 6H-1, is just starting to flow back, following the fracture stimulation. We are adding a second rig in the Tuscaloosa in March and expect to have 10 wells down in the play by year end.

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) -Tuscaloosa Marine Shale

November 8, 2011 - Chesapeake Energy (CHK) said in their last conference call that they will not be chasing land acreage in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. Chesapeake Energy (CHK) said that based on what they are seeing, mineral rights are to expensive in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. They also stated that they will not be chasing anything in California such as the Elm County Field or the Monterey Shale.

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale has been hitting the news lately on some nice oil wells being drilled. The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale is located in south Louisiana and Mississippi.

Tuscaloosa Marine Shale - Encana (ECA) - Amite County, MS

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale is located in southern Louisiana as well as southwestern Mississippi. This emerging shale play is catching the eye of drilling companies due to the oil potential there. Could the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale find be a mini Eagle Ford Shale ? Only time will tell! One thing I like to do is to buy the stocks in these new shale fields, especially when they have a huge stake in the discovery. Encana (ECA) is the stock you will want to watch. Jefferson County, MS: Haynesville Shale Update

Mainland Resources, Inc. (MNLU.OB) recently announced an update on the Haynesville Shale, located in Jefferson County, MS:

As of September 27, 2010, the Company is drilling ahead on the Burkley-Phillips No.1 well at 16,531 feet. Since the last activity update on August 16, 2010, the Company drilled to a depth of 12,940 feet where it conducted electric line logging, acquired side-wall cores in selected zones and successfully installed and cemented a 9 5/8” casing string. As previously reported, the well penetrated a sand package preliminarily identified as the Lower Tuscaloosa Massive Sand with approximately 50 feet of thickness exhibiting elevated mud log gas readings. Further analysis of the sand, utilizing electric line logging and side-wall cores, has warranted the initiation of a technical and commercial analysis, which is currently in progress.
The forward plan calls for drilling operations to continue to a depth of approximately 19,200 feet where wireline logging will be conducted to analyze the current open-hole interval and then a string of protective casing will be installed and cemented. At that point, the Company will begin drilling the final section of the well targeting the Haynesville Shale and will continue the drilling program to an anticipated depth of 22,000 feet.

Nick Atencio, CEO, states, “We are pleased with the drilling progress to this point and anticipate we will continue to make similar progress to the programmed total depth. As warranted, we will continue to analyze any secondary targets we encounter as we drill through the Hosston and Cotton Valley intervals.”

Management will continue to provide updates as milestone events are reached on the well.

Comstock Resources, Inc.: Mississippi shale sale

Comstock Resources, Inc. (CRK) recently released an update and announced that it will be selling $75 million worth of natural gas and crude oil assets from it's Mississippi properties:

Comstock Resources, Inc. (CRK) announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its oil and gas properties located in Mississippi to a privately held company. Comstock expects to receive $75 million in cash pursuant to the terms of the sale. Net production from the properties to be sold averaged 1,138 barrels of oil and 0.9 MMcf of natural gas per day during the first six months of 2010. The sale is expected to close prior to year end and is subject to completion of customary due diligence by the purchaser and closing conditions.

"The successful sale of this non-core asset allows us to further concentrate our resources and personnel on our core assets in the Haynesville and Bossier shale and our emerging position in the Eagle Ford shale," stated M. Jay Allison, Chief Executive Officer of Comstock.

Morgan Creek Energy Corp. (MCKE.OB) announced today that they acquired roughly 21,000net acres of mineral oil and gas leases in the Haynesville shale. The land is located in Lamar, Jones and Forrest County, Mississippi. The agreement resides with Westrock Land Corp. which is a privately owned company. Westrock will own all rights to the land and hold a minimum 75% net revenue interest.

The Company has entered into this agreement with the mineral leaseholder, Westrock Land Corp., and is based on representations that Westrock owns all rights to all depths including the Haynesville Shale Formation, pursuant to the oil and gas leases with a minimum 75% net revenue interest.

Haynesville Shale in Mississippi? MNLU drilling Mississippi Salt Basin

Is the Haynesville Shale located in Mississippi? One company, Mainland Resources ( MNLU ) is about to find out whether Mississippi holds any nautral gas in the Mississippi Interior Salt Basin.

MNLU has signed a Letter Agreement to acquire 5000 net acres in Mississippi where the Company plans to drill the first test well to evaluate the potential Haynesville Shale gas formation in the region.

Under the terms of the Letter Agreement, Mainland Resources, Inc. will acquire 100% Working Interest and 75% Net Revenue Interest on all gas formations within the 5000 net acres ("the leases"), which are located in southwestern Mississippi within the Mississippi Interior Salt Basin.

A number of USGS and US Department of Energy resource assessments have been commissioned over this area over the last decade. All report the deep gas potential of the area, pointing to the Upper Jurassic as a favorable exploration target. According to public records, no wells have been drilled to test the Haynesville Shale formation in the target region to date.
Company President Mike Newport states, "We have data that suggests the potential Haynesville Shale in this region could be similar in nature to the gas bearing Haynesville Shale in northwest Louisiana. Our geological team believes that this could be just as productive as the groundwork that's been laid in the Louisiana play."

"No one knew just how good the deep shale in northwest Louisiana was until an exploration company stepped up and drilled the Haynesville, Hosston and Cotton Valley formations. That's what we're setting up to do in this potential new Haynesville shale play in Mississippi," adds Newport.

The Letter Agreement for the acquisition of the Leases is set for closing on or before October 15, 2008 and is subject to standard due diligence review by Mainland Resources, Inc.
