Brigham Exploration Co. (BEXP) announced yesterday that they completed 3 wells in the Bakken Shale area, located in Williams County, ND. The wells averaged a 24-hour peak flow back rate of 2,150 barrels of oil equivalent.

The Weisz 11-14 #1H, Abe Owan 21-16 #1H and the Sukut 28-33 #1H produced at early 24-hour peak flow back rates of 2,278 (2,003 barrels of oil and 1.65 MMcf), 2,213 (1,983 barrels of oil and 1.38 MMcf) and 1,959 (1,752 barrels of oil and 1.24 MMcf) barrels oil equivalent, respectively. The Weisz, Abe Owan and Sukut were completed with 37, 37 and 32 fracture stimulation stages, respectively. Brigham's working interests in the Weisz, Abe Owan and Sukut are approximately 52%, 57% and 42%, respectively. The Sukut was completed with U.S. Energy Corp. (NASDAQ: USEG) and Brigham will back in for a portion of USEG's working interest in the Sukut after payout of the well. Brigham has completed 24 long lateral high frac stage wells in Rough Rider with an average early 24-hour peak rate of approximately 2,413 barrels of oil equivalent.

Williams County, ND: Bakken Shale update

Samson Oil & Gas Limited (SSN) released an update for the Bakken Shale. Pending settlement of the appropriate permits, Samson Oil & Gas will stimulate two new wells by August 23, 2010:

In light of the decision not to proceed with the Exploratory Unit, Samson is also seeking permits for two further wells which will protect a private lease from expiration later this year. All of the leases that are subject to drilling permits will form a post -closing settlement with the Buyer and will be settled in December 2010 so long as the drilling permits are valid and the associated leases remain in place.

Rodney #1-14H (27% working interest)
As of 0600 hours CST the Rodney #1-14H was drilling ahead at a measured depth of 16,372 feet and is expected to reach a total depth of 17,225 feet in the next 24 hours. The well path has been maintained within the Middle Bakken Formation and has returned oil and gas shows that are consistent with previous well in the North Stockyard Field. The Rodney #1-14H well is located in Township 154N, Range 99W, Section 14 in Williams County, North Dakota. This is Samson’s fourth Bakken well in the North Stockyard Field. The fracture stimulation of the Rodney well is planned as a 35 stage stimulation placing 4 million pounds of proppant and is due to commence the week of August 23rd.

Gary #1-24H (37% working interest)
The Gary well has been drilled and cased to a total depth of 17,727 feet and the fracture stimulation of that well is planned to commence on August 30th. The stimulation is planned to include 20 stages, 5 stages more than the Gene well which returned an IP of in excess of 3000 BOEPD. The stimulation will include the placement of 3 million pounds of proppant. The Gary #1-24H well is located in Township 154N, Range 99W, Section 24 in Williams County, North Dakota. This well was Samson’s third Bakken well in the North Stockyard Field.

Stimulation Operations

Operations to stimulate both the Rodney and the Gary wells are expected to commence the week of August 23rd. The detail sequencing of the stimulation operations have yet to finalized, but the current plan is to commence the first 8 stages of the 35 stage plan in Rodney and then to proceed to the 20 stage Gary stimulation.

Bakken Formation: Mountrial County ND Oil Shale Update

Whiting Petroleum ( WLL ) provides an update on the Bakken Shale Formation in Mountrial County, North Dakota today, 1/20/09. Whiting is active in the Sanish Field and the Parshall Field.

Sanish Field. Whiting's Sanish area in Mountrail County, North Dakota encompasses 125,557 gross acres (83,606 net acres). December 2008 net production in the Sanish field averaged 7.5 MBOE/d, an 832% increase from 0.8 MBOE/d in December 2007. As of January 12, 2009, Whiting has participated in 65 wells (27 operated) that target the Bakken formation, of which 49 are producers, seven are completing and nine are drilling. Of these operated wells, 23 were completed in 2008. Whiting has completed and placed on production its first Bakken infill well in the Sanish field, the McNamara 42-26H. This well was drilled between two horizontal Bakken producers, the Locken 11-22H and the Liffrig 11-27H. The initial production rate at the McNamara well was 2,170 BOE/d (measured December 8, 2008), which falls between the initial production rates of the two offset wells. There was no indication of communication or interference with either of the offset wells. Based on these results, Whiting expects to develop its leases with two 10,000-foot horizontal wells in each 1,280-acre spacing unit. Whiting has also completed its first Three Forks horizontal well in the Sanish field, the Braaflat 21-11TFH. The initial production rate at the Braaflat well was 1,005 BOE/d (measured January 1, 2009). Production and pressure data from this well will be analyzed over several months to determine the viability of developing the Three Forks.

Whiting intends to drill an additional 28 operated Bakken wells in the Sanish field during 2009, with an average working interest of 74%, five of which were drilling at January 12, 2009. Whiting expects an average of six drilling rigs to be working in the Sanish field during 2009. Whiting expects its net capital expenditures in the Sanish field during 2009 to be approximately $150.6 million.

Parshall Field. Immediately east of the Sanish field is the Parshall field, where Whiting owns interests in 73,760 gross acres (18,315 net acres). Whiting's net production from the Parshall field averaged 6.7 MBOE/d in December 2008, a 341% increase from 1.5 MBOE/d in December 2007. As of January 12, 2009, Whiting has participated in 95 Bakken wells, the majority of which are operated by EOG Resources, Inc., of which 85 are producers, four are completing and six are drilling. Of these wells, 64 were completed in 2008. Whiting intends to participate in the drilling of an additional nine wells in the Parshall field during 2009, with an average working interest of approximately 16%. Whiting expects its net capital expenditures in the Parshall field during 2009 to be approximately $12.1 million.

Bakken Shale: Three Forks - Sanish should be tested

Senator Byron Dorgan wants the Sanish/Three Forks Oil region to be tested to find out how much Oil is really there. The Three Forks rests below the Bakken Shale.

Government scientists should try to find out how much crude can be recovered from a promising reservoir beneath North Dakota’s already prolific oil patch, Sen. Byron Dorgan says. The U.S. Geological Survey says a study now would be premature.
The Three Forks-Sanish formation is made up of sand and porous rock directly below the rich Bakken shale in western North Dakota.
“The question is: What’s there and what’s recoverable using today’s technology?” said Dorgan, D-N.D., who said he will make a formal study request to the USGS next week.

Halliburton HAL 3rd Quarter Earnings .76EPS - Montney Shale, Bakken Shale

Halliburton ( HAL ) released 3rd quarter earnings this morning 10/20/08 and provided updates on the Montney Shale of Canada and the Bakken Shale of North Dakota.

For the third quarter, HAL earned .76 Earnings per share.

In Canada's Montney shale play, Halliburton completed its 50th horizontal CobraMax(R) job. The CobraMax(R) process now averages less than eight hours per zone from cut to cut, an improvement from over 24 hours on earlier wells.

Halliburton has set its 900th Swellpacker(R) isolation system in horizontal Bakken wells in the Williston Basin. The use of this packer system has allowed operators to compartmentalize their wellbores for fracture completions resulting in improved production. Delta Stim(R) sleeves are also used with the Swellpacker(R) systems greatly reducing the time required to complete a well.

Bakken Shale BEXP Brigham Exploration drilling - Three Forks Mountrail County, North Dakota ND

Here is a Bakken Shale drilling update, this time coming out of Brigham Exploration ( BEXP ) in which one of their wells is hitting 1,100 barrels per day.

Williston Basin Three Forks and Bakken Completions -- In Mountrail County, North Dakota, Brigham is currently completing its first Three Forks test, the Adix 25 #1H. The Adix 25 #1H encountered good shows while drilling, and will be stimulated in late September.

Bud Brigham stated, "Later this month we plan to fracture stimulate twelve intervals in the Three Forks lateral of the Adix 25 #1H well. By increasing the number of stimulated intervals, we've seen substantially higher early production performance from our horizontal Bakken wells. We fracture stimulated twelve intervals in our most recent Bakken completion, the Carkuff 22 #1H, which is located just over one mile west of the Adix 25 #1H. The Carkuff 22 #1H produced at an initial rate of 1,110 barrels of oil per day and continues to perform very strongly. At this point, it is easily our best well. Just one mile east of the Carkuff 22 #1H, we previously completed the Bakke #1H which commenced production at 380 barrels of oil equivalent per day after the stimulation of seven intervals. We also have four significant working interest Parshall/Austin area Bakken wells currently completing, several of which should provide results in late September or early October. To the south in Mercer County, North Dakota, we plan to commence our first southern extension Bakken well in October. This will be the first test on our over 31,000 net acres controlled in that area."

Bakken Drilling West of the Nesson Anticline -- In Williams and McKenzie Counties, North Dakota, in the general area of Brigham's recently successful Mrachek 15-22 #1H Bakken discovery, Brigham is commencing two additional horizontal Bakken wells. The Olson 10-15 #1H and the Figaro 29-32 #1-H are both planned as 9-10,000-foot laterals, whereas the Mrachek 15-22 #1H was a 5,000-foot lateral. The Olson 10-15 #1H is currently drilling at a depth of approximately 2,200 feet. Brigham is picking up its second operated rig to commence the Figaro 29-32 #1-H in the next two weeks and currently plans to commence its third operated rig in early 2009.

Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. Announces Significant Bakken Discoveries, Three Forks/Sanish Plans, and Updates Accelerated 2008 Drilling Schedule and Capital Position.

Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. (AMEX: NOG) ("Northern Oil") announced today it has recently participated in the successful completion of three wells in the emerging North Dakota Bakken play, bringing to eleven the total number of producing wells in which Northern holds an interest.
In addition, Northern holds a working interest in an additional fourteen wells that are in the drilling or completion stages and is included in nearly 70 permitted or docketed-for-permit drilling locations that are expected to drill between now and early 2009. Northern Oil controls approximately 60,000 net acres in the North Dakota Bakken play, yielding over 90 net well locations based on 640 acre drilling units. In addition, Northern controls approximately 22,000 net acres in Sheridan County, Montana and has successfully completed two wells to the Red River formation.
"Northern's first mover leasing advantage is yielding significant rewards for our stakeholders," said Northern Chief Executive Officer Michael Reger. "We continue to accelerate our participation in successful North Dakota Bakken development, providing solid production results. With over 70 permits pending, our net production should continue to grow at an increasing rate in the second half of the year."
The recently completed Johnson 33 #1H well operated by Brigham Exploration is representative of Northern's growing success in the North Dakota Bakken play. The well flowed at an early rate of 650 BOPD, with sustained production of approximately 560 BOPD. The Johnson well is located significantly north of the Parshall field, representing an important Northern extension of prolific Bakken production. Northern participated in the Johnson 33 #1H with a 16.5% Working Interest.
"With approximately 10,000 net acres near the successful Johnson 33 #1H well, Northern is well positioned to benefit from Brigham's important success," Reger said. Northern is currently participating in Continental Resources' Skachenko 1-31H well in Dunn County, ND. The well is a direct offset to the Bice 1-29H, also drilled by Continental. The Bice well - announced in late May - is among the first Three Forks/Sanish discoveries in the region.
"Northern's first Three Forks/Sanish well is significant in that, if successful, it provides an additional opportunity to grow reserves and production in what we believe is another prolific oil resource within our leasehold position," Reger added.
