SM Energy Company (SM): Haynesville Shale Update

By Andrea: http://oilshalegas.com

SM Energy Company (SM) recently released an operational update on the Haynesville shale, located in East Texas:

Approximately $35 million is budgeted for Haynesville shale activity in 2011. SM Energy has budgeted five (5) gross operated horizontal wells for 2011, of which the majority of costs will be carried under the previously announced carry and earning agreement covering a portion of our acreage position in East Texas. The Company will also participate in approximately 20 gross (approximately 2 net) partner-operated horizontal wells next year.

SM Energy is currently exploring a number of options for its operated Haynesville shale acreage position in East Texas which would allow the Company to drill enough wells in 2011 and early 2012 to hold its existing acreage while minimizing the amount of capital deployed. Twelve (12) gross wells in 2011 in addition to the operated wells discussed above and eight (8) gross wells in 2012 would need to be drilled to hold the Company's acreage position. The Company has approximately 22,000 net acres in the Shelby Trough in East Texas that is prospective for both the Haynesville and Bossier shales as well as other productive zones up hole.

Haynesville Shale Drilling to Increase in 2010

Natural Gas prices have been slowly creeping up in December 2009. The higher prices have been associated with the colder weather that has been hitting the northeast. Natural Gas inventories have been very weak as a result of this.

Comstock Resources Inc. (CRK) announced two weeks ago that they will be increasing their drilling budget in the Haynesville Shale for 2010. With Natural Gas currently around $5.75, I am expecting $7-$8 natural gas in 2010. Comstock has acreage in Desoto Parish Louisiana and East Texas.

Comstock Resources, Inc. Announces 2010 Exploration and Development Budget

Comstock Resources, Inc. ("Comstock" or the "Company") (NYSE: CRK) announced that it plans to spend approximately $385.0 million in 2010 for development and exploration activities. Comstock expects to add an additional drilling rig in the second quarter of 2010 to the six rigs which the Company is currently utilizing in its Haynesville shale drilling program.

Haynesville Shale Update May 18, 2009

Lower natural gas prices have cut back a lot of drilling in the haynesville shale which is located in East Texas and North Louisiana. Below is a look back at last weeks activity in the haynesville shale natural gas field.

Haynesville Shale Report - 5/18/09

Mainland Resources, Inc. and JV Partner Spud Third Haynesville Shale Well on the Company's DeSoto Parish, Louisiana Property

Mainland Resources, Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: MNLU; 5MN-Frankfurt) a Nevada Corporation (the "Company") reports that its Joint Venture (JV) Partner and Operator has commenced drilling operations on the Company's third JV well to evaluate additional potential of the Haynesville Shale gas formation on Mainland's Louisiana leases.

The Dehan et al 15#1H was spud on May 4, 2009 and is currently drilling at 6850 feet.
The well will be drilled to approximately 12,000 feet or a depth to sufficiently test the Haynesville Shale formation. Mainland will own a 25.42% Working Interest in this unit. The JV Partner and Operator will have a 38.12472% Working Interest in the well.

Haynesville Shale: XTO Energy 2009 Panola County

XTO Energy has come out with earnings today, 2/19/09, and updated investors on its haynesville shale operations. XTO talks about its East Texas properties below.

From Seeking Alpa

We drilled first Haynesville shale well in western Panola County, the New Horizon's number one that came in at 8.5 million a day, that is not an IP, that well averaged over 8 million a day for the first 15 days. It's currently offline because of the DCP Cartage flat (ph) issue, should be back up next week.

We believe that well from the way we're choking and holding our performance would have made over 8 million a day for the first month. If you look at the Haynesville wells you are seeing some that have 15 million a day, first month, you are seeing a lot that are 45 million a day first month sales. So, I would say this well as far west as it is, averaging 8 million a day is a good precursor for where our acreage is going to be plenty good on the Texas side

And last but not least, we have had an extension area of south of Bald Prairie and Robertson County that we have been working on for two or three years, have increased our position here to almost 80,000 net acres and have started in earnest to drill development wells down there and had two wells coming at 6 million a day in the quarter from the land and Bossier and that gives us lot of hope and belief that area will pan out to be a major growth area, of course in future.

Bossier Shale: East Texas Gastar ( GST ) Hits Big!

Need more evidence that the Bossier Shale is better then the Haynesville Shale? Gastar Exploration ( GST ) came out and announced one of their Bossier Shale wells are hitting 23.0 MMCF per day of Natural Gas. This is an OUTSTANDING Well!

For those who aren't familiar with these shale plays around the USA and Canada, the Haynesville Shale is located in Louisiana and East Texas. Below the Haynesville Shale you have the Bossier Shale.

Gastar Exploration Ltd. (NYSE Alternext US:GST) and today announced that it has successfully completed its best producing well to date, the Belin #1, which was completed in two lower Bossier zones. The well is flowing at a combined initial gross sales rate of 41.2 MMcf/day on a 20/64ths inch choke with approximately 10,300 psi of flowing casing pressure. Gastar owns a 52% working interest before payout (40% net revenue interest before payout) in the Belin #1.

"The Belin #1 is our best producer to date, and based on the high quality of the reservoir rock and the strong initial production rate, we expect it will also be our best well to date in the Hilltop area in terms of estimated recoverable reserves," said J. Russell Porter, Gastar's President and CEO.

"To put this well into perspective, our biggest producer prior to the Belin #1 was the Wildman #3, which IP'ed at 23 MMcf/day. Comparing it against the entire play, we believe the Belin #1 is among the top ten best wells reported by any producer in any area of the Bossier," he added.
"The Belin #1 contains the highest porosity rock we have drilled to date, and we believe there is high-quality reservoir rock uphole from our initial lower completions that could allow us to maintain strong flow rates well into the future."

In addition, Gastar is currently drilling a sidetrack to the LOR #7 and expects to reach total depth in approximately 5 to 10 days. Gastar has a 50% working interest before payout (37.5% net revenue interest before payout) in the LOR #7.

Haynesville Shale: Devon Energy DVN Update

Devon Energy ( DVN ) recently released earnings and highlights from their 3rd quarter operations in the Haynesville Shale:

From Seeking Alpha:

Since we announced our second quarter results; we have acquired 50,000 net acres in Haynesville Shale at an average cost of 3500 per acre.

In total we will have built a position of almost 1.4 million net acres in four new unconditional gas plays. This includes 153,000 acres in the Horn River, 580,000 acres in Haynesville and 650,000 acres in two new Shale plays that we are not ready to identify or discus.

Moving east in the Haynesville Shale and east Texas and northwest Louisiana as Larry mentioned we added 50,000 net acres in the third quarter and expect to add an additional 50,000 net acres in the fourth quarter. This will bring our total Haynesville shale position to 580,000 net acres. During the third quarter, we initiated drilling on our first two horizontal wells in the Haynesville Shale. These 100% working interest hole 103-H located in Panola County, Texas has reached total vertical depth and is now drilling the lateral section. We plan to begin completion operations next week.

Our second Haynesville Shale horizontal well the 100% owned McSwain 7H located in Shelby County, Texas is also at drilling. We expect to have these results from both these wells in our year end call. Our focus in the Haynesville Shale throughout the reminder of 2008 and 2009 will be to better characterize our acreage through additional drilling, coring and testing in order to define the areas of the play, where we believe we can achieve consistent, repeatable results just as we did in the Barnett Shale.

We planned to drill two additional horizontal wells in the Haynesville Shale during the fourth quarter with two dedicated rigs running. One of the great things about our acreage position in east Texas and Western Louisiana is the stack pay zones. An example of this is that our Stockman Field in the Carthage area. Not only does this field have Haynesville Shale potential, but it also has deeper potential in the Haynesville line.

Haynesville Shale: New Petrohawk Energy ( HK ) Well hitting 17 MCF per day

Petrohawk Energy ( HK ) came out with an operational update 10/21/08 regarding its Haynesville Shale formation and its new shale discovery, Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas.

Petrohawk's third operated well in the Haynesville Shale, the Hunt Plywood 36 #11H (100% WI), located in Section 36, Township 15 North, Range 13 West, was placed on production at a rate of approximately 17.0 Mmcfe/d, on a 22/64" choke with 7,225 pounds flowing casing pressure. The well has averaged 15.4 Mmfe/d over the first 30 days of production.
The Company's first operated Haynesville Shale well, the Elm Grove Plantation (EGP) #63H, has produced for approximately 100 days and has averaged 8.8 Mmcfe/d over this period. Petrohawk's second operated well, the Hutchinson 9 #5H, has been on production for approximately 67 days and has averaged 14.6 Mmcfe/d over that time period. Several additional Haynesville Shale wells are currently being completed.

The Company has instituted a "pre-drill", or spudder rig, program in the Haynesville Shale designed to accelerate the pace of drilling. Ten operated horizontal rigs are currently drilling in the play as well as five spudder rigs. Petrohawk expects to exit 2008 with twelve operated horizontal rigs drilling in the play. To date, the Company has drilled through the Haynesville Shale in a total of 16 wells. The added well control has shown the Shale to be consistently thick and with excellent reservoir quality in all of these wells. With the drilling program currently in place, Petrohawk estimates that approximately 18 wells will be on production prior to the end of the fourth quarter out of a total of 26 wells drilled through the Shale section by the end of the year.

In addition to Haynesville Shale activities in Northwest Louisiana, Petrohawk will begin testing Haynesville and Bossier Shale prospects in Shelby County, Texas, with initial results expected before year end. Two operated rigs will be dedicated to this program during the fourth quarter. Drilling activity will also initiate on acreage included in the previously announced Joint Venture with EOG Resources in Nacogdoches County during the fourth quarter. Three rigs are expected to be operating within this joint venture area, targeting the Haynesville Shale as well as James Lime and Travis Peak formations.

Haynesville Shale: Leasing & Mineral Rights Problems

There is no doubt that the sudden drop in natural gas prices has had a huge impact on the Haynesville Shale formation in East Texas and Louisiana. If any of these Shale plays in the USA and Canada can overcome this type of drop it would be the Haynesville Shale and Barnett Shale.

With many companies such as Chesapeake Energy ( CHK ) and Petrohawk Energy ( HK ) cutting back on drilling and their budget, mineral rights leasing will fall as well. In fact, Landowners are nervous about what I described above. Some even fearing they won't get paid. This is why it is so important when signing a mineral rights lease that you take it seriously and hire a great lawyer to represent you.

Here is a great article about what is happening right now with regards to the land leasing from Chesapeake Energy. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081018/NEWS01/810180357/1060

"The key is in the wording, Fitzgerald said. What she's witnessed in the past few days is Chesapeake not honoring an "agreement to lease" prepared by the company's own legal counsel. The document, which landowners she represented opted for instead of a letter of intent, states it is a binding and enforceable agreement but it is still not the actual lease."

Haynesville Shale: Penn Virginia ( PVA ) Update 10/02/08

Penn Virginia ( PVA ) came out today and gave operational guidance specifically on the Haynesville Shale.

A. James Dearlove, President and Chief Executive Officer of PVA, commented, "In spite of the reduced guidance levels for 2008, our growth strategy remains intact in all of our significant resource plays. The reduced 2008 guidance is largely the result of a number of unanticipated circumstances, including the effects of two hurricanes which impacted our largest producing region in East Texas. In addition, we are accelerating the transition from an exclusive vertical Cotton Valley development program in East Texas, which was supported by six drilling rigs at the beginning of 2008, to the current combination of four to five rigs drilling horizontal Lower Bossier (Haynesville) Shale wells and two to three rigs drilling vertical Cotton Valley wells. The near-term effect of this transition is a delay of production contributions from the horizontal shale drilling program, which has much longer spud-to-production lead time relative to vertical Cotton Valley wells. Even though this decision has affected near-term production growth, the benefits of expected superior economic returns and accelerated long-term production growth favor this approach, as reflected in our preliminary 2009 guidance.”

Haynesville Shale - GDP Goodrich Petroleum Update

Goodrich Petroleum ( GDP ) has come out and given shareholders an update of their Haynesville Shale operations:

HAYNESVILLE SHALE ACTIVITY UPDATE

The Company has completed the T. Swiley No. 5 well in the northwest portion of the Minden field in Rusk County, Texas. The well is a vertical Haynesville Shale test with an initial production rate of 1,300 Mcf per day from approximately 150' of net Haynesville Shale pay. The well is the fourth vertical well the Company has drilled and tested in the Haynesville Shale formation in the Minden and Beckville fields in East Texas, where the Company maintains a 100% working interest in approximately 39,000 net acres. The Company's initial horizontal Haynesville Shale test in East Texas is planned for the fourth quarter of 2008.

In North Louisiana, the company has logged the Hall No. 9-1, which is the third vertical Haynesville Shale test in the Central Pine Island area of Caddo Parish, Louisiana. The Hall No. 9-1, in which the Company owns a 50% interest, logged approximately 315' of pay in the Haynesville Shale with excellent gas shows. Also in North Louisiana, in the Company's joint venture with Chesapeake Energy, the initial horizontal Haynesville Shale test in the Bethany-Longstreet field is planned to spud this week in northern DeSoto Parish, as well as an additional vertical Haynesville Shale test in the Longwood field in Caddo Parish. A second rig is planned to be added to the Chesapeake joint venture in October.

The Company currently expects to drill 16-18 (12-13 vertical and 4-5 horizontal) Haynesville Shale wells in East Texas/North Louisiana by the end of 2008.

Gil Goodrich, Goodrich's Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer commented, "The increase in proved reserves at mid-year further illustrates the success of our strategy to rapidly convert non-proven 2P and 3P reserves into the proven classification and increase proven net asset values. We are very pleased with our drilling results in the first half of this year adding approximately 75.5 Bcfe, including the 11.4 Bcfe of production replaced during the first six months of the year, on drilling and development capital expenditures of approximately $165 million. Our recent acreage acquisition in Nacogdoches County further expands our footprint in the Angelina River Trend where we have experienced continued success during 2008 for both the Travis Peak and James Lime formations. Finally, our nine vertical Haynesville Shale wells drilled to date, which have been strategically spaced across our 60,500 net acres in North Louisiana and East Texas, have significantly de-risked our core Haynesville Shale acreage. This positions us extremely well to begin the development and exploitation of the Shale with horizontal drilling, and we are excited to begin this aggressive horizontal Haynesville development in the next few weeks."

Haynesville Shale Mineral Rights: Louisiana Attorney General warns of mineral rights scam

Louisiana Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell is warning landowners of a scheme aimed at stealing their mineral rights.

The scam emerged amid increasing demand for drilling leases in the Haynesville Shale, a massive natural gas find made recently in northwest Louisiana and eastern Texas.

The attorney general's office said landowners should be cautious of letters in the mail that contain a check and ask them to sign documents and return them.

"If you are a mineral owner and receive a letter in the mail, with a check included, requesting that you sign a document that appears to be a mineral lease, you should be extremely cautious because you may be permanently signing away valuable mineral rights without realizing it," Caldwell said in a consumer alert.

The attorney general said the contract might contain general power of attorney provisos that would allow the holder to amend the contract even after it's signed to reflect that all mineral assets, even those already in production."

The attorney general encourages all property owners in Louisiana to seek legal advice before signing any documents relating to the sale or lease of mineral rights," the alert said.
