Haynesville Shale: Desoto Parish Well 2009

Mainland Resources ( MNLU ) has come out and reported a huge Natural Gas well result today, February 3, 2009. MNLU is announcing that their first Haynesville Shale well is hitting 23.3 mmcfe in the DeSoto Parish area.

Mainland Resources ( MNLU ) reports that the Company and its operator have placed the Griffith 11 #1 well in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana on production. The Griffith 11 #1(Section 11, 13N, 14W) had an initial production rate of 23.3 Mmcfe/d on a 28/64” choke with 7,550# flowing casing pressure. The Griffith 11 #1 is the first well to be drilled with the Company’s operator in the Haynesville shale on its leases. Mainland owns a 40% Working Interest in this well and all subsequent Haynesville wells to be drilled on its leases. Mainland Resources is also formalizing plans to drill and complete in the Hosston/Cotton Valley formations on its Louisiana property.

The Company received a Reserve Report in December 2008 that shows Proved Undeveloped Reserves of 2.143 Bcf in these formations from a single future twin to the current well. This estimate is based on 40-acre well spacing. Mainland holds a 100% Working Interest in all rights above the base of the Cotton Valley formation, including the Hosston, in 2,695 net acres. Company President, Mike Newport states, “We have validated our model to drill to the Haynesville shale on our DeSoto Parish leases and have our first producing Haynesville gas well on line. Our commitment now is to use this success across the entire project so that Mainland gets the maximum value from its unique position in this major gas play."

Haynesville Shale - Natural Gas Prices - Boone Pickens 9/03/08

Natural Gas prices have plummeted over the past few months going from $14 to the mid $7's. The question is, is the Haynesville Shale still economical to drill if Natural Gas falls even further?

Yesterday, Boone Pickens came on CNBC and stated he thinks there is a huge amount of supply in natural gas which the demand is not as strong as the supply. Boone Pickens says he thinks Nat Gas could even fall back to $6 in the coming months.

With $6 natural gas, how will small companies like Goodrich Petroleum ( GDP ) and Petrohawk Energy ( HK ) be able to drill the haynesville shale? The answer is simple, these companies could stop drilling the Haynesville Shale and drill the formations above it such as the cotton valley formation. If their stock prices get to low, you could see a Devon Energy, Chesapeake Energy, or XTO Energy swoop and and buy these companies out.

With low natural gas prices, you will see a decline in drilling, but this decline will cause supplies to fall and in the long term will stable the price for natural gas out.

The Haynesville Shale is here to stay!

Haynesville Shale - Cubic Energy Update QBIK

Cubic Energy has reached total depth of 11,950 feet on its Estes 7 No. 1. 7 5/8” casing was set at 10,208 feet and 4 ½” liner was set at 11,950 feet. The Estes 7 No. 1 is Cubic’s fourth Haynesville Shale well in its northwest Louisiana acreage. With the 7 5/8” casing, the Company will be able to drill horizontally in the Haynesville Shale at a later date, after being vertically completed in the Haynesville Shale. The Estes 7 No. 1 is Cubic’s first Haynesville Shale well to be drilled in the Company’s southern acreage position of Bethany Longstreet.
Log analysis identified Pettit, Cotton Valley and Hosston zones in addition to two Shale zones in the Estes 7 No. 1 The lower Shale zone is located between 11,420 feet and 11,890 feet in depth and calculates an estimated 186 BCF of Total Shale Gas and 173 BCF of Free Shale Gas per square mile of reservoir. The upper Shale zone is located between 10,730 feet and 11,150 feet in depth and calculates an estimated 100 BCF of Total Shale Gas and 93 BCF of Free Shale Gas per square mile of reservoir. This is comparable to the Free Shale Gas in the Company’s Johnson Branch acreage.
Immediately following the drilling of the Estes 7 No. 1, the Company will rig down and move to the Red Oak Timber 5 No. 1 also located in Cubic’s southern acreage of Bethany Longstreet. The Company will vertically drill to the Haynesville Shale at approximately 11,950 feet and will use the same casing program as used on the Estes 7 No. 1. Cubic has a 35% working interest in the Estes 7 No. 1 and the Red Oak Timber 5 No. 1.
The Company also announced the last of its pipeline construction in Cubic’s northern acreage of Johnson Branch should be finished in the next few weeks. Additionally, the Company has scheduled completions for the last of the wells in this area. Cubic has a 49% working interest in the Johnson Branch acreage.
