Cardium Shale - Alberta Canada Oil Field - Devon Energy (DVN)

By Tim - http://oilshalegas.com

Devon Energy has also confirmed positive results in the Cardium Shale oil field. Located west of Alberta Canada, the Cardium Shale is a new emerging oil field.

On the exploration front in Canada, we continue to evaluate the oil and liquids-rich potential of numerous play types across our more than 4 million net acres. Our most encouraging results from our 2011 program came in at the Ferrier Area where we are targeting cardium oil. We drilled 8 wells in the area and saw 30-day IP rates as high as 940 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

This could be a sign of things to come. One thing is for sure, Forest Oil (FST), Exxon Mobil (XOM), and ConocoPhillips (COP) are drilling for oil in the Cardium as well.

Cardium Shale is Heating Up in 2012

By Tim - http://oilshalegas.com

Oil and Gas companies are starting to release their earnings and operational reports. In going through these reports, something stuck out to me so far. The Cardium Shale is heating up!

The Cardium Shale is an oil field located in Western Alberta Canada. Exxon Mobil (XOM) recently stated that they had very encouraging results so far in the Cardium Formation. Here is what they said below.

"In Canada, we have had encouraging early results in the Cardium, with 2 wells on production at year end and additional drilling planned in 2012."

This could be a sign of things to come. One thing is for sure, Forest Oil (FST), Devon Energy (DVN), and ConocoPhillips (COP) are drilling for oil in the Cardium as well.

Hiram Brook Formation: New Oil Discovery - New Brunswick

There was a new oil discovery in Canada announced this past week located in southern New Brunswick. Which oil prices falling 5% per day, the buzz isn't as great as it once was. Back in July, if positive reports would have come out on the Bakken Shale located in Canada, North Dakota, and Montana, it would have been all over the news.

Corridor Resources Inc. (CDH – TSX) reported December 3rd that it made a potentially significant oil discovery at its South Branch G-36 well situated 3 kilometers southeast of the McCully natural gas field in southern New Brunswick. The G-36 well penetrated a thick sequence of Hiram Brook sands containing indeterminate fluid content based on well logs prior to being drilled to a total depth of 2642 meters, nearly 500 meters into the underlying Frederick Brook shale. The well has been cased and two frac stimulation treatments have been carried out over two intervals within the Hiram Brook formation. The first frac, conducted over 10 meters of potentially gas bearing sands within the depth interval 1757 - 1840.5 meters in the lower Hiram Brook formation, yielded a show of oil and no measurable amounts of gas and is considered to be tight. The second frac was conducted in a 38 meter thick sand within the depth interval 1574 – 1612 meters in the upper Hiram Brook formation. The frac placed 30 tonnes of proppant prior to being prematurely concluded due to a frozen water line which may have reduced the effectiveness of the frac. Following 10 days of flow-back and clean-up of frac fluids, the well was flowing clean, 45° API oil and no water at a measured rate of 59 barrels of oil per day through production tubing. The well is currently shut in awaiting installation of a pump to reduce down-hole pressure and increase the rate of production prior to undertaking long-term testing later in December to evaluate the economic potential of the well. An additional 31 meters of potential oil pay (previously reported as potential gas pay) in the upper Hiram Brook formation have not as yet been completed in this well.

Horn River Shale - Nexen ( NXY ) Canada Shale Update

This morning, Nexen ( NXY ) has come out with earnings and updated investors on their Horn River Shale.

Following the success of last winter's drilling program in the Horn River basin in northeast British Columbia, we decided to drill two horizontal wells this summer. The wells have been drilled and are being fraced. The results from these wells will be taken into consideration as we plan our upcoming winter program for the area. This shale gas play has the potential to become one of the most significant shale gas plays in North America. It has been compared to the Barnett Shale in Texas by other operators in the area as it displays similar rock properties and play characteristics.
We have approximately 88,000 acres in the Dilly Creek area of the Horn River basin with a 100% working interest. As previously announced, we estimate these lands contain between 3 and 6 trillion cubic feet (0.5 to 1.0 billion barrels of oil equivalent) of recoverable contingent resource which could double our total proved reserves. Further appraisal activity is required before these estimates can be finalized and commerciality established.

Utica Shale - TLM Talisman Energy Provides Update Report 9/03/08 Quebec Canada Lorraine Shale

Talisman Energy came out yesterday with an operational update on its Utica Shale properties in Quebec Canada.

Talisman Energy Inc. ( TLM ) announced a successful test from the Utica shale in its Gentilly well in Quebec. The Gentilly well is located on the south side of the St. Lawrence River, approximately 100 kilometers south of Quebec City. Talisman holds a 75% interest in the well and is operator.

The well, which is a re-entry to a previously drilled Trenton-Black River well, flowed at 800 mcf/d from one completed interval on a sustained basis during the 18-day test period. At the time of shut in, the well was still cleaning up and pressures and flow rates were constant.
"We are encouraged by the initial results of this vertical well," said John A. Manzoni, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We have additional testing to do on the well, including zones within the Basal Lorraine and Lorraine shale formation, but this is a very promising start to our unconventional program in Quebec."

The Lorraine shale sits on top of the Utica and can be up to 6,500 feet thick. The Utica shale ranges between 300 and 1,000 feet. Early indications show that both the Lorraine and Utica rocks are thick, porous and appear brittle and over pressured, all of which are conducive to artificial fracture stimulation.

Talisman has an extensive land position with an option to earn 760,000 net acres through drilling in Quebec. The Company is in the early stage of evaluating the rock properties and reservoirs. Talisman will test three to four pilot areas over the next 18 months, with up to four additional wells planned prior to year-end.

Horn River Shale bigger then Haynesville Shale & Barnett?

Is the Horn River Basin Shale in B.C, Canada bigger then the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana & the Barnett Shale in Texas?

The Horn River Shale located in the North East section of British Columbia, Canada is the newest and possibly the biggest shale play in North America to hit the stage. Not to many people know about this shale as they do about many of the other American Shales.

Geologists estimate the Horn River Shale could hold 250 trillion cubic feet of Natural Gas reserves. Only 10-20% would be recoverable leaving this shale play with the potential to hold 25-50 TCF's of natural gas.

Recently Wood Mackenzie, a research firm, also back up the figure above.

The Utica Shale Play - Canada 7-09-08

The Utica Shale Play, located in Quebec Canada, has been heating up lately. Several companies are buying up acres in a big way. The leader appears to be Forest Oil Company FST....followed by several small companies which I will be listing later today on my website.

Keep an eye on this shale as it is estimated to hold over 24 trillion cubic feet in Natural Gas Reserves. Action really only started on this shale last year beginning with Forest Oil. Haynesville Shale started I believe in 2005-2006.
